Driving by car to El Chaltén
There are several car rental companies active in El Calafate. As mentioned before it is a ride of 3h30 and without any gasoline station on your way. I recommend taking a 4×4 if you are planning to drive further than El Chaltén. The paved road stops at the city border and if you are planning to start your hike to Mount Fitz Roy from the El Pilar point, you definitely need a SUV.

Bus from El Calafate to El Chaltén
Another easy, budget-friendly, and comfortable way to reach El Chaltén is by taking the bus from El Calafate. The ride takes about 4 hours, departing from the main bus terminal in El Calafate and arriving at the terminal right in the center of El Chaltén.
A one-way ticket costs around 30 USD. Buses depart at fixed times, with more frequent departures during the high season from October to April. From personal experience, it is one of the easiest ways to get there: the ride is smooth, nobody feels exhausted, and you arrive ready for hiking the next day.
For my readers, I was able to arrange a door-to-door bus service for only 58 USD per person. This is a particularly convenient option because it avoids the hassle of getting a taxi to the bus terminal and managing luggage on the street. When you add the cost of a taxi plus a regular bus ticket, you often end up paying the same amount as this door-to-door service. From experience, I can confidently say it’s both budget-friendly and stress-free
